In 1884, the New Orleans Mint produced a significant run of silver dollars, struck with the distinctive 'O' mint mark. This particular coin, preserved in Extra Fine condition, represents a classic era of American coinage. Containing 0.7734 troy ounces of silver with a purity of 0.900, these heavy silver pieces served as a staple of daily commerce in the United States for nearly eight decades. The obverse features a profile of Liberty adorned with a Phrygian cap, her hair band inscribed with the word 'Liberty'. Encircling this central portrait are thirteen stars representing the original colonies, the year of issue 1884, and the Latin motto 'E Pluribus Unum'. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted clutching both an olive branch and arrows, symbolizing a desire for peace alongside a readiness for defense. The eagle is framed by the inscriptions 'United States of America', 'One Dollar', and the national motto 'In God We Trust'. Out of a total mintage of 9,730,000 for this year and mint location, this survivor offers a tangible look at late nineteenth-century manufacturing and artistry.
