The 1885 Morgan silver dollar represents a fascinating chapter in American coinage, originating from the famous Carson City Mint in Nevada. This particular run marked the end of regular, continuous coin production at the Nevada facility before a temporary closure. With a remarkably low mintage of just 228,000 pieces, many of these silver dollars were melted down, while a substantial portion was locked away in government vaults for decades, eventually reaching the public through historic GSA sales. Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse features a profile of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with native American agricultural elements, specifically cotton and wheat. The year 1885 is inscribed along the bottom rim. On the reverse, a bald eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. The distinctive 'CC' mint mark is positioned just above the 'One dollar' denomination. Struck in 90 percent fine silver, this coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver and measures 38.1 mm in diameter. This specimen has been certified in Choice Mint State 64 condition, preserving the crisp details of Morgan's iconic engraving.
