During the late nineteenth century, the British Empire was represented on its currency by the long-reigning monarch, Queen Victoria. Issued between 1887 and 1892, these sterling silver half crown coins circulated widely in Victorian Great Britain, serving as a staple of daily commerce. Each piece contains 0.4205 troy ounces of actual silver weight, struck in 0.925 fine silver. The obverse of this denomination showcases the celebrated Jubilee portrait of Queen Victoria. In this depiction, she faces left wearing a crown and a veil, a design created to mark her fifty years on the throne. The Latin inscriptions surrounding her likeness include her name and her title as Defender of the Faith, abbreviated as FID DEF. On the reverse, the coin displays a detailed crowned coat of arms nestled within the chain of the Order of the Garter. The year of mintage is positioned directly below this heraldic shield.
