1887 Indian Head Cent AU
The 1887 Indian Head Cent is a striking example of late nineteenth-century American copper coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this piece is composed of an alloy containing 95 percent copper, with the remaining 5 percent made of tin and zinc. It survives today in About Uncirculated condition, retaining much of the original detail and texture from the day it was minted. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse of the coin features a stylized representation of Liberty wearing a traditional Native American feathered headdress. The words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" encircle this central figure, with the year "1887" positioned clearly at the bottom. On the reverse, the coin displays its face value, "ONE CENT", nested within a decorative wreath that runs along the inner border. This simple yet elegant combination of a symbolic portrait and a classic wreath design makes the 1887 cent a captivating object for anyone interested in the artistry of early United States currency.
