The 1887 Morgan silver dollar stands as a classic representative of America's late nineteenth-century coinage. Minted in Philadelphia, this particular specimen bears no mint mark, which is the traditional signature of the nation's primary minting facility. Struck from 0.900 fine silver, the coin contains 0.77344 troy ounces of precious metal, offering a substantial weight and presence that defined the commerce of its era. On the obverse, the design features a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap decorated with a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Surrounding her profile are the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, the thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the 1887 year of issue. The reverse displays a powerful bald eagle with its wings spread, clutching both an olive branch of peace and arrows of strength. This central motif is encircled by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR, along with the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, positioned above the eagle's head. Preserved in an exceptional graded state of Mint State 65 (MS-65), this coin retains its original luster and sharp details just as it emerged from the minting press.
