The 1887 Morgan Dollar stands as a remarkable example of late nineteenth-century American coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this silver coin carries no mint mark, a traditional distinction for the nation's primary minting facility during this era. Containing 0.7734 troy ounces of silver with a purity of 0.900, this specimen is preserved in a remarkable state of preservation, certified as Mint State 65 (MS-65). On the obverse, the design presents a profile of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap, adorned with a band inscribed with the word "Liberty." This central figure is encircled by the Latin motto "E Pluribus Unum," the 1887 year of issue, and thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse displays a powerful bald eagle with its wings spread, clutching both an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Surrounding this central motif are the inscriptions "United States of America" and the denomination "One Dollar." The national motto, "In God We Trust," is positioned directly above the eagle, completing a design that captures the spirit of its time.
