1887-O Morgan Dollar MS-64 PCGS

0.7734 troy oz .900 1887 MS-64 (PCGS)

Struck in 1887 at the southern branch mint in Louisiana, this silver dollar represents a fascinating moment in American coinage. The New Orleans Mint, which had closed during the Civil War, resumed its operations in 1879. This specific issue was produced under the mandates of the Bland-Allison Act, resulting in a total mintage of 11,550,000 pieces for that year. The obverse features George T. Morgan's classic depiction of Lady Liberty facing left. She wears a Phrygian cap decorated with native American agricultural staples, specifically cotton and wheat. Surrounding her portrait are thirteen stars representing the original colonies, the year of manufacture, and the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. On the reverse, an eagle with spread wings holds an olive branch alongside arrows, symbolizing both peace and readiness. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR frame the eagle, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is positioned directly above its head. The "O" mint mark is clearly visible on this side, indicating its origin in New Orleans. This specimen has been certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64) condition, highlighting its remarkable state of preservation. Composed of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, the coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver. It measures 38.1 mm in diameter, 3.1 mm in thickness, and weighs 26.73 grams.
