1888 Morgan Dollar BU

0.7734 troy oz .900 1888 Brilliant Unc

The 1888 Morgan silver dollar stands as a classic representative of America's late nineteenth century coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia mint, this piece carries no mint mark, a traditional feature for coins produced at the nation's primary minting facility during this era. This particular specimen is preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, meaning it retains its original luster and sharp details just as it appeared when leaving the coining press. Designed by George T. Morgan, the coin's obverse showcases a left-facing profile of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap adorned with a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. The year 1888 is clearly struck at the bottom of the profile. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted with its wings spread wide, grasping an olive branch of peace in one talon and a cluster of arrows in the other. Above the eagle, the national motto "In God We Trust" is visible, surrounded by the country's name and the one dollar denomination. With a purity of 90 percent silver, each of these dollars contains 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. The Philadelphia mint produced a total of 19,183,000 of these silver dollars in 1888, making it a prominent issue in the broader Morgan series that ran from 1878 to 1921.
