The 1888 Morgan silver dollar represents a classic era of American coinage, originating from the Philadelphia Mint. Struck from 0.900 fine silver with a total precious metal weight of 0.7734 troy ounces, this piece is part of a storied series produced from 1878 to 1921. Because it was minted in Philadelphia, it bears no mint mark, distinguishing it from sister coins of the same year. Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse of the coin showcases a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap, adorned with a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. The year 1888 is clearly struck below the portrait, surrounded by stars and the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse displays a powerful bald eagle with its wings spread, clutching both an olive branch of peace and a bundle of arrows. Above the eagle, the national motto "In God we trust" appears in Gothic script. The coin is framed by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the face value, ONE DOLLAR. This particular specimen survives in Very Good to Very Fine condition, offering a tangible look at late nineteenth-century artistry.
