The 1888 Morgan silver dollar minted in New Orleans carries a striking characteristic that has fascinated numismatists for generations. Known widely by the designation VAM-4, this specific coin features a distinct double die obverse. The doubling is most prominent on the profile of Liberty, particularly on her lips and nose, earning this celebrated variety the memorable nickname Hot Lips. This particular example is preserved in a condition ranging from Very Good to Very Fine. On the obverse, the profile of Liberty is shown wearing a Phrygian cap. Her hair band is inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the 1888 year of issue.
