Struck in the late nineteenth century, this 1888 silver dollar represents a classic era of American coinage. Minted at the historic New Orleans facility, the coin features an 'O' mint mark on its reverse. It has been certified in a highly preserved state, graded as Mint State 65 (MS-65), showcasing the fine details of its original production. The obverse displays a left-facing profile of Liberty, encircled by thirteen stars, the year 1888, and the Latin motto 'E Pluribus Unum'. On the reverse, an American bald eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, surrounded by the inscriptions 'United States of America', 'One Dollar', and 'In God We Trust'. This coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of silver with a purity of 90 percent. The design is the work of George T. Morgan, an engraver born in Birmingham, England, who immigrated to the United States in 1876. Morgan eventually rose to the position of Chief Engraver at the United States Mint, serving in that role from 1917 until his death in 1928. This particular issue from 1888 was part of a total mintage of 12,150,000 pieces.
