Known technically as the VAM-4 variety, this specific coin is celebrated for its dramatic doubled die obverse. The doubling is particularly prominent on the profile of Liberty, creating a distinct visual effect that has earned this issue the famous nickname 'Hot Lips.' On the obverse side, the portrait of Liberty is depicted wearing a Phrygian cap, with the word 'Liberty' clearly visible upon her hair band. The classic Latin motto 'E Pluribus Unum' curves along the border, accompanied by thirteen stars that symbolize the original colonies, and the 1888 date of manufacture.
