Struck in the late nineteenth century, this United States twenty-dollar gold piece represents a fascinating era of American coinage. Minted in San Francisco, as indicated by the S mint mark, this specimen survived the massive gold recalls of the 1930s. The coin contains nearly a full troy ounce of gold, specifically 0.9675 ounces, with a purity of 90 percent. The obverse features the classic Liberty head design. Lady Liberty is depicted facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, though only the partial inscription LIB is visible on the worn surface of the design alongside the 1888 date of manufacture.
