The 1888 silver dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint represents a fascinating moment in American coinage. On the obverse, a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty is depicted wearing a Phrygian cap. Her headband is inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the date 1888. This side of the coin was designed by George T. Morgan. The reverse features a powerful bald eagle with its wings spread wide, grasping an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in its talons. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR frame the eagle, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is positioned above. The S mint mark, located just below the wreath, identifies this coin as a product of the historic San Francisco facility. Measuring 38.1 mm in diameter and 3.1 mm in thickness, this specimen has been certified in Choice Mint State 63 condition, preserving its original mint luster for modern observers to appreciate.
