The 1888 silver dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint represents a fascinating moment in American coining. Out of the entire run of this famous series, which spanned from 1878 to 1921, this particular issue is notably scarce. Only 657,000 of these pieces were minted, making them far harder to find than many of their contemporary counterparts. Designed by George T. Morgan, the coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty on its front, her hair adorned with a band inscribed with her name and a Phrygian cap. The reverse side presents a powerful bald eagle clutching both an olive branch and a cluster of arrows, symbolizing a desire for peace alongside a readiness for defense. Just below the wreath on this side, the distinct 'S' mint mark identifies its origin at the California facility. Each coin was minted with a metal purity of 90 percent silver, containing exactly 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. This specific piece has survived in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while still preserving the essential elements of its historic design and the clear 1888 date.
