The 1888-S Morgan Dollar is a compelling piece of late nineteenth-century American coinage, minted at the San Francisco facility. This particular issue is notable for its relatively low mintage of just 657,000 pieces, making it a scarcer find among the broader silver dollar series that ran from 1878 to 1921. Struck in 90% fine silver, each coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse of the coin presents a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap, adorned with a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. The year 1888 is displayed at the bottom, surrounded by the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse side displays a powerful bald eagle with its wings spread. In its talons, the eagle grasps both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, symbolizing a desire for peace alongside a readiness for defense. The San Francisco mint mark, a small S, is located below the wreath surrounding the eagle, just above the denomination of ONE DOLLAR.
