In 1889, the San Francisco Mint struck a total of 774,700 gold double eagles, each carrying a face value of twenty dollars. These impressive pre-1933 United States coins were minted from 90 percent gold, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of the precious metal. Today, surviving examples offer a tangible look at late nineteenth-century American coinage. The obverse of this gold piece features the classic Liberty design, with the date 1889 positioned below the portrait. On the reverse, the 'S' mint mark is present, denoting its origin from the West Coast minting facility. This particular specimen has been certified and graded in Mint State 62 (MS-62) condition, highlighting its remarkable state of preservation over more than a century.
