In 1890, the Philadelphia Mint struck a mere 88 proof examples of the five dollar gold half eagle. This incredibly low mintage makes any surviving specimen a rare sight, but one preserved in such an extraordinary state of preservation is especially remarkable. Graded as Proof 66 Deep Cameo (PR-66 DCAM) and verified by, this coin represents a pinnacle of late nineteenth-century American coining technology. Crafted from 0.900 fine gold with a metal content of 0.2419 troy ounces, the coin features a stark, beautiful contrast between its frosted design elements and its deeply mirrored fields. The obverse depicts the classic Liberty profile wearing a coronet, surrounded by stars, with the date 1890 positioned below. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows, shielded by the national crest.
