In 1890, the Carson City Mint in Nevada struck a limited run of Liberty Double Eagle gold coins. With a total mintage of only 91,209 pieces, these twenty-dollar coins represent a fascinating moment in American minting history. Each coin was crafted from 0.900 fine gold, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse features the classic profile of Liberty, adorned with a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars with the date 1890 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, the powerful heraldic eagle is flanked by the Carson City mint mark, CC. The reverse also bears the national mottos IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM, alongside the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS. This particular specimen has survived the decades in remarkable condition, graded as Almost Uncirculated 50. Because many of these large gold coins were heavily circulated or melted down, finding a certified example with such well-preserved details offers a captivating look at nineteenth-century frontier coinage.
