1890-CC Morgan Dollar MS-62 PCGS
1890-CC Morgan Dollar MS-62 PCGS
In 1890, the remote Carson City Mint in Nevada produced a run of silver dollars that captured the spirit of the American West. Operating as a frontier facility with a naturally restricted output compared to major urban mints, the Carson City branch struck just 2,309,841 of these Morgan dollars. Today, surviving examples certified in Mint State 62 (MS-62) offer a remarkable look at this era of western expansion and the monetary shifts surrounding the Sherman Silver Purchase Act. The coin's obverse displays a profile of Lady Liberty, modeled by Anna Willess Williams. She wears a Phrygian cap decorated with native American agricultural elements, specifically cotton blossoms and wheat. On the reverse, a bald eagle stretches its wings while grasping an olive branch and arrows, symbolizing both peace and readiness. The motto "In God We Trust" is inscribed above the eagle, and the distinctive "CC" mint mark is stamped below the wreath. Struck from 0.900 fine silver, each coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. George T. Morgan designed these impressive pieces, which measure 38.1 millimeters in diameter and 3.1 millimeters in thickness. This specific issue stands as a fascinating artifact of late nineteenth-century American minting, reflecting the unique challenges and character of a rugged Nevada coin-striking operation.
