Struck in the final decade of the nineteenth century, this impressive twenty-dollar gold coin represents a classic era of American coinage. Minted at the San Francisco facility in 1890, the piece contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. It survives today in a notable state of preservation, certified by professional graders at Mint State 62. The obverse design, created by James B. Longacre, presents a left-facing profile of Liberty. Her hair is bound by a band clearly displaying her name, while a ring of thirteen stars encircles the portrait, representing the original colonies. The year 1890 is positioned at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle holds a protective shield across its chest. Thirteen stars are clustered in an oval pattern above the eagle, accompanied by the national motto. The outer rim is inscribed with the country of origin and the twenty-dollar denomination, completing a design that captures the spirit of pre-1933 United States gold coinage.
