Struck in the year 1890 at the San Francisco Mint, this Morgan silver dollar is a remarkable survivor from the late nineteenth century. It contains 0.7734 troy ounces of 90 percent pure silver, representing a time when precious metal coinage was a staple of everyday commerce in the United States. The obverse of the coin displays a left-facing profile of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap, which features a band inscribed with the word "Liberty." Encircling her portrait are thirteen stars, the date 1890, and the Latin motto "E Pluribus Unum." On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted holding both an olive branch and arrows, symbolizing a desire for peace alongside a readiness for defense. The reverse design also features the inscriptions "United States of America," "One Dollar," and the motto "In God We Trust." Positioned below the eagle is the "S" mint mark, indicating its origin at the San Francisco facility.
