The 1891 Indian Head Cent represents a classic era of United States minor coinage. Struck in Philadelphia, this one-cent piece is composed of a durable alloy containing 95 percent copper, with the remaining 5 percent consisting of tin and zinc. The word LIBERTY is inscribed across the band of the headdress, while the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date 1891 frame the central portrait. This design, created by James B. Longacre, offers a unique representation of national identity from the period. On the reverse, the denomination ONE CENT is positioned boldly in the center. This text is encircled by a detailed wreath, with a small shield resting at the very top. At the bottom of the wreath, a bundle of arrows is secured by a tied bow, completing a highly detailed and symbolic reverse design.
