Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1891, this historic silver dollar represents a classic era of American coinage. As a coin that circulated in daily commerce, this piece belongs to a famous series that served as active currency for nearly eight decades. Because it was produced at the main Philadelphia facility, it features no mint mark, a traditional characteristic of coins from that location. The obverse displays a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap, which is adorned with a band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted holding an olive branch in one of its talons while grasping a cluster of arrows in the other, symbolizing both peace and readiness. The reverse also bears the traditional national inscriptions, including the denomination of ONE DOLLAR, the country name, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Composed of 90 percent silver, each of these dollars contains 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. Having survived years of circulation, this coin is preserved in Very Good to Very Fine condition, showing the honest wear of an object that once passed through the hands of late nineteenth-century Americans.
