In 1891, the San Francisco Mint struck a significant run of double eagles, producing 1,288,125 of these large gold coins. Each piece was composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of the precious metal. Carrying a face value of twenty dollars, these coins served as heavy, reliable workhorses of American commerce during the late nineteenth century. This specific coin has survived the decades in remarkable condition, earning a Mint State 61 (MS-61) certification. The obverse features the classic profile of Liberty wearing a coronet, which is inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Below her portrait sits the date 1891. On the reverse, the coin bears the mint mark S, indicating its origin from the West Coast facility, alongside the traditional national motto IN GOD WE TRUST and the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS.
