In 1892, the Carson City Mint struck a limited run of just 82,968 gold half eagles, each carrying a face value of five dollars. These pieces represent a fascinating era of American coining, minted in the American West from 0.2419 troy ounces of actual gold content. This specific specimen has survived the decades with an Extremely Fine 40 grade (XF-40), preserving the distinct details of its historic design. The obverse features a classic depiction of Liberty, her hair secured by a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. Below her portrait is the year of issue, 1892. On the reverse, an eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows is encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE D. The famous CC mint mark is positioned below the eagle, indicating its origin in Nevada, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST appears on a scroll above the eagle's head.
