1892 Columbian Expo Half AU Details (Cleaned)
In 1892, the United States Mint embarked on a new path by producing its very first commemorative coin. This silver half dollar was created specifically to help fund the upcoming 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The issue marked the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus sailing to the Americas, capturing a major cultural milestone of the late nineteenth century on a circulating medium. The coin features distinct artistry on both sides, developed from concepts by Olin Warner. The front presents a detailed portrait of Christopher Columbus, sculpted by Charles Barber. On the back, designed by George T. Morgan, the famous ship Santa Maria sails above two representing hemispheres of the globe. Legible inscriptions on the coin include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, COLUMBIAN HALF DOLLAR, and WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION CHICAGO, alongside the dual dates of 1492 and 1892. Struck in 90 percent silver with a metal content of 0.3617 troy ounces, this particular specimen is preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition, showing signs of cleaning but retaining its historic details. It stands as a fascinating artifact from the dawn of American commemorative coinage, representing both a world's fair and a legendary voyage.
