In 1892, the United States Mint embarked on a new numismatic path by issuing its very first commemorative coin. This silver half dollar was specifically minted to help fund the upcoming 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, celebrating four centuries since Christopher Columbus first sailed to the Americas. Struck in 90 percent silver, this coin contains 0.3617 troy ounces of precious metal and represents a landmark moment in American coinage history. The obverse of the coin features a detailed portrait of Christopher Columbus. This side was crafted by Charles Barber, who based his work on an original concept by Olin Warner. The surrounding inscription clearly identifies the issuing nation as the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, paired with the denomination of HALF DOLLAR. On the reverse, the design showcases Columbus's flagship, the Santa Maria, sailing proudly above two globe hemispheres. This side was engraved by George T. Morgan, also adapting a concept by Olin Warner. The reverse inscriptions commemorate the event with the words COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION CHICAGO and the year 1892, marking a historic celebration captured in silver.
