In 1892, the United States Mint embarked on a new creative path by producing its very first commemorative coin. This silver half dollar was minted specifically to generate funding for the upcoming 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, while simultaneously marking the four hundredth anniversary of Christopher Columbus landing in the Americas. The obverse side of the coin features a detailed profile portrait of Christopher Columbus. This depiction was crafted by Charles Barber, who based his work on an original concept by Olin Warner. The surrounding inscriptions clearly mark the coin as a United States half dollar, celebrating the explorer. On the reverse, the famous ship Santa Maria sails above two distinct hemispheres, representing the Old and New Worlds. George T. Morgan engraved this reverse design, also drawing inspiration from a concept by Olin Warner. Struck in Brilliant Uncirculated condition with a silver purity of 90 percent, this historic issue represents a major milestone in American numismatic design.
