In 1892, the United States issued its very first commemorative half dollar to mark a major historical milestone. Struck in 90 percent silver, this coin contains 0.3617 troy ounces of precious metal and represents a fascinating moment in American numismatic design, brought to life through a collaboration of prominent artistic minds. The front of the coin displays a detailed profile portrait of Christopher Columbus. This depiction was sculpted by Charles Barber, who based his work on an original concept by Olin Warner. The reverse side showcases Columbus's famous flagship, the Santa Maria, sailing proudly above two globes that represent the hemispheres. This intricate reverse scene was executed by George T. Morgan, also adapting a concept from Olin Warner. This particular specimen has survived in remarkable condition, certified by professional graders at a high Mint State 65 level. It also displays beautiful toning, which adds a unique visual character to the historic silver surfaces.
