In 1892, the United States Mint embarked on a historic first by striking its very first commemorative coin. The design of this half dollar is a collaborative artistic effort. On the obverse, a side-profile portrait of Christopher Columbus is featured, sculpted by Charles Barber from an initial concept by Olin Warner.
