In 1892, the Philadelphia mint produced a run of just over one million silver dollars. Today, examples preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition allow us to appreciate the intricate details of a design that circulated throughout American commerce for roughly eight decades. Because these coins were struck at the main Philadelphia facility, they are distinguished by the absence of any mint mark. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap, which is adorned with a band bearing her name. Encircling this central image are thirteen stars, the year 1892, and the Latin motto meaning out of many, one. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted with outspread wings, grasping both an olive branch and a bundle of arrows to represent peace and readiness. This side of the coin carries the country of origin, the face value of one dollar, and the national motto expressing trust in God. Containing 0.7734 troy ounces of 90 percent pure silver, this issue remains a compelling artifact of late nineteenth-century American coinage.
