1892-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-63 PCGS

0.9675 troy oz .900 1892 PCGS

In 1892, the San Francisco mint produced this impressive twenty dollar gold piece, which has survived the decades in an exceptional graded Mint State 63 condition. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, the coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal. This specific issue represents a classic era of United States coinage, showcasing the enduring artistry of the late nineteenth century. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty, her hair secured in a tight bun with loose curls cascading down her neck. A coronet inscribed with her name rests upon her head, while a ring of thirteen stars encircles the portrait, representing the original colonies. The date 1892 is anchored firmly at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, a powerful eagle with outstretched wings holds a shield over its chest. Above the bird, an oval of thirteen stars is illuminated by a halo of rays. The reverse is also inscribed with the national origin, United States of America, and the denomination, written out as Twenty Dollars. This iconic design by James B. Longacre was minted for over half a century, from 1850 to 1907, making this 1892-S specimen a remarkable survivor of a historic series.
