1892-S Morgan Dollar VF
The 1892 Morgan Silver Dollar stands as a classic representation of late nineteenth-century American coinage. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of the precious metal. The San Francisco origin is marked by the small letter S on the reverse side. This particular piece survives in Very Fine condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that likely circulated during a time when silver dollars were a staple of daily commerce. On the obverse, the design presents a profile of Liberty adorned with a Phrygian cap. Her hair band is inscribed with the word Liberty, surrounded by the Latin motto E Pluribus Unum, thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the 1892 year of mintage. The reverse displays a bald eagle with its wings spread, clutching both an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions United States of America, One Dollar, and the motto In God We Trust. Part of the celebrated Morgan Dollar series, these coins served as active currency in the United States for a span of nearly 80 years. Out of an original mintage of 1,200,000 pieces for this specific date and mint combination, survivors like this one offer a tangible connection to the monetary system of the late 1800s.
