During the final years of her historic reign, Queen Victoria was depicted on British coinage in a mature, dignified portrait known as the veiled bust. Minted by the Royal Mint between 1893 and 1901, these gold half sovereigns offer a direct window into the twilight of the Victorian epoch. The obverse displays this solemn likeness of the queen, draped in a veil, surrounded by Latin inscriptions denoting her royal titles. The reverse of the coin features one of the most celebrated numismatic designs in British history. Created by Benedetto Pistrucci, the dynamic engraving depicts Saint George on horseback, brandishing a sword to slay a mythical dragon. Struck in 0.9167 fine gold with an actual gold content of 0.1177 troy ounces, these pieces survive in average circulated condition, showing the honest wear of coins that once moved through the channels of global commerce.
