1893-1901-M Australia Gold Sovereign Victoria Veil Head AU
Struck at the Melbourne Mint during the final years of Queen Victoria's reign, this Australian gold coin represents a significant era in sovereign history. Each piece contains 0.2354 troy ounces of gold, minted in 0.9167 fine purity. These coins survive today in Almost Uncirculated condition or higher, preserving the intricate details of their late nineteenth-century craftsmanship. The obverse displays the veiled portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, a design representing her senior years on the throne. The surrounding Latin inscriptions, partially captured in the historical strike, reflect her royal titles. On the reverse, the legendary scene of Saint George on horseback slaying a dragon comes to life, a masterpiece created by Benedetto Pistrucci. Collectors can identify the Melbourne origin by locating the small 'M' mint mark positioned directly beneath the horse on the reverse design.
