In 1893, the United States Mint embarked on a new numismatic path by releasing its very first commemorative coin. Struck in 90% silver, this half dollar was created to generate funding for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, a grand world's fair celebrating the four-hundredth anniversary of Christopher Columbus landing in the Americas. The coin features a detailed portrait of Christopher Columbus on its obverse, a design crafted by Charles Barber based on an original concept by Olin Warner. On the reverse, George T. Morgan adapted another concept by Warner to depict Columbus's flagship, the Santa Maria, sailing above two hemispheres. This historic issue contains 0.3617 troy ounces of silver, representing a landmark moment where art, history, and national celebration merged on a circulating denomination.
