In 1893, the United States Mint embarked on a new creative path by producing its very first commemorative coin. This silver half dollar was specifically struck to help fund the World's Columbian Exposition, a massive world's fair hosted in Chicago to celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus reaching the Americas. The coin's design represents a collaborative effort between two legendary Mint engravers, both working from initial concepts created by Olin Warner. On the obverse side, Charles Barber rendered a detailed portrait of Columbus. The reverse side, crafted by George T. Morgan, depicts the famous flagship, the Santa Maria, sailing above two distinct globes representing the eastern and western hemispheres. Struck in 90 percent silver, this historic fifty-cent piece contains 0.3617 troy ounces of precious metal. It stands as a fascinating physical artifact from one of the most influential cultural gatherings of the nineteenth century, marking the beginning of the rich tradition of American commemorative coinage.
