In 1893, the United States issued a highly unusual quarter dollar. This silver piece stands out as a fascinating historical artifact, representing the only commemorative coin of this denomination produced by the nation during the nineteenth century. Struck in Philadelphia, it contains 0.1808 troy ounces of silver with a purity of 90 percent. The front of the coin displays a crowned profile of Queen Isabella I of Spain, facing to the left. This portrait is framed by the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the year "1893". This depiction marks a rare occurrence of a foreign monarch appearing on official United States coinage. The reverse side offers an equally compelling image, showing a kneeling woman holding a distaff and spindle. This illustration of industry is accompanied by the abbreviated denomination "QUAR. DOL." on the lower portion of the design. With a limited mintage of only 24,214 pieces, this specific example has survived in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the delicate details of both intricate designs for modern observers to appreciate.
