The obverse of the coin features a left-facing profile of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, decorated with a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Encircling her portrait are the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the 1893 date of issue. Because it was struck at the main Philadelphia mint, it bears no mint mark.
