In 1893, the United States minting facility in New Orleans produced a limited run of five-dollar gold coins, known as the Liberty Half Eagle. This specific issue features a modest mintage of only 110,000 pieces, making it a compelling representative of late nineteenth-century Southern minting history. Struck in 90 percent pure gold, each coin contains just under a quarter ounce of precious metal, specifically 0.2419 troy ounces. The obverse of the coin displays the classic Liberty design, accompanied by the date 1893. The reverse features an eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by the inscriptions of the nation's name and the denomination, abbreviated as FIVE D.
