Struck in the late nineteenth century, this 1893 half eagle represents a classic era of United States gold coinage. Produced at the San Francisco Mint, the coin is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.2419 troy ounces of the precious metal. It survived the decades in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the intricate details of its original engraving from a total mintage of 224,000 pieces. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band clearly inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle her profile, representing the original colonies, with the date 1893 positioned below. This design was created by Christian Gobrecht. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield draped across its chest. The eagle holds symbols of national strength while surrounded by the legend denoting the United States of America. The denomination is expressed at the bottom as Five D., and the distinct S mint mark under the eagle confirms its origin from the West Coast minting facility.
