1894 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-63 PCGS

0.9675 troy oz .900 1894 PCGS

In 1894, the Philadelphia Mint struck this impressive twenty dollar gold piece, a denomination often referred to as a double eagle. Containing 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900, this substantial coin represents the classic era of United States gold coinage. This specific piece has survived in remarkable condition, certified by professional graders as Mint State 63. The design, created by James B. Longacre, was a staple of American commerce, minted continuously from 1850 to 1907. On the obverse, a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. The year 1894 is clearly inscribed at the bottom of the design. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with wings spread wide, bearing a protective shield upon its breast. Above the eagle, another thirteen stars form an oval pattern beneath a halo of rays. The country of origin, United States of America, is written along the upper rim, while the face value, Twenty Dollars, is inscribed below.
