The 1894 Morgan silver dollar struck at the New Orleans Mint represents a fascinating era in United States coinage. Minted with a silver purity of 90 percent, this coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. Surviving today in a circulated state graded from Very Good to Fine, it carries the honest wear of a coin that likely passed through many hands in the late nineteenth century. On the obverse, the design showcases a left-facing profile of Liberty adorned with a Phrygian cap. The word Liberty is inscribed upon her band, while the classic Latin motto E Pluribus Unum arches over her head. Encircling the portrait are thirteen stars, which pay homage to the original thirteen colonies that formed the nation, with the 1894 year of issue anchored at the bottom. The reverse displays a heraldic bald eagle with its wings spread wide, gripping both an olive branch of peace and arrows of readiness in its talons. Above the eagle, the motto In God We Trust is written in Gothic script, while the legends United States of America and the One Dollar denomination frame the central design. The distinctive O mint mark below the wreath identifies this piece as a product of the historic Louisiana facility.
