The 1894 Morgan silver dollar represents a fascinating moment in late nineteenth-century American coining. Struck at the historic southern mint in New Orleans, Louisiana, this specific issue had a total production run of 1,723,000 pieces. Surviving today in Extra Fine condition, the coin retains much of its original design definition, allowing observers to appreciate the intricate details of its engraving. On the obverse side, a left-facing profile of Liberty is depicted wearing a Phrygian cap, with her hair band clearly displaying the word LIBERTY. Framing this central portrait along the rim are the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, the 1894 year of issue, and thirteen stars representing the original colonies. Each coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, minted with a fineness of 90 percent. The reverse side presents a powerful bald eagle with its wings spread, grasping an olive branch of peace alongside a cluster of arrows. Encircling this national motif are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the face value, ONE DOLLAR. Suspended above the eagle is the traditional motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. The small letter O located below the wreath identifies this dollar as a product of the New Orleans Mint.
