In 1895, the Philadelphia Mint produced this twenty dollar gold coin, a denomination often referred to as a double eagle. This specific issue has been graded in Mint State 64 (MS-64), indicating a remarkable level of preservation for a coin minted over a century ago. The design, created by James B. Longacre, was a staple of American coinage from 1850 to 1907. On the obverse, a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the year 1895 inscribed below. The reverse side displays a heraldic eagle with its wings spread wide, holding a shield. Above the eagle, another arrangement of thirteen stars is surrounded by a halo of rays.
