Minted in 1895 at the Melbourne branch of the Royal Mint, the coin carries the 'M' mint mark, identifying its origin. It contains 0.2354 troy ounces of gold at a purity of 0.9167, a standard that helped establish the sovereign as a trusted medium of exchange across the world. The obverse of the coin displays the mature, veiled portrait of Queen Victoria, often referred to as the 'Veil Head' or 'Old Head' design.
