The late nineteenth century was a period of refined craftsmanship in American coinage, as demonstrated by this 1896 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin carries a face value of two and a half dollars. It represents a classic era of United States coinage, minted from a composition of 90 percent gold and containing 0.1209 troy ounces of the precious metal. Only 19,070 of these gold pieces were struck in Philadelphia during 1896, making them relatively scarce survivors of their era. Because it was produced at the main Philadelphia facility, the coin does not bear a mint mark, leaving the clean fields of the design uninterrupted. The obverse prominently displays the year 1896 beneath the classic portrait of Liberty. This particular specimen has survived the decades in remarkable condition, graded as Mint State 63 (MS-63). At this level of preservation, the original luster and fine details of the engraving remain beautifully intact, offering a clear window into the minting standards of the late 1800s.
