In 1896, the Philadelphia Mint produced a mere 103 proof examples of the five dollar gold half eagle. This incredibly small production run makes any surviving specimen a rare sight. This particular coin has been certified at an extraordinary level of preservation, graded as Proof 66 Plus with a Deep Cameo designation, and further verified by. The obverse features the classic profile of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars and the year 1896. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, with the denomination expressed as "FIVE D." below. Because there is no mint mark, we know this piece was struck at the main Philadelphia facility, where the finest dies were prepared to create these mirror-like proof finishes.
