1896 Indian Head Cent AU
The 1896 Indian Head Cent is a fascinating example of late nineteenth-century American bronze coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this one-cent piece is composed of an alloy containing 95 percent copper, with the remaining 5 percent made of tin and zinc. It represents a classic era in United States coinage, showcasing the artistry of designer James B. Longacre. On the obverse, the coin displays a depiction of Liberty adorned in a traditional feather headdress. The legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" arches around the portrait, with the year 1896 anchored at the bottom. The design captures a unique period of American numismatic art, blending classical allegorical figures with native motifs. The reverse of the coin is framed by a lush wreath, which is topped by a small shield. At the bottom of the wreath, a bundle of arrows is secured by a ribbon bow. The central inscription boldly states the denomination as "ONE CENT". This particular specimen is preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition, allowing observers to appreciate the fine details of both the obverse portrait and the intricate reverse elements.
